Ontario's Lake Erie north shore is a string of small harbour towns joined by farm roads, beach access lanes and long views over the lake. This itinerary runs west from Port Dover to Long Point and Port Rowan, then on to Port Burwell and Port Stanley, and it can be done in a long weekend. It is written for the shoulder and off season. In November many parks and attractions have already closed, cut back their hours or switched to winter schedules. Each stop below says what is open now and what has to wait for spring.
Day 1: Port Dover
Harbour, pier and perch
Port Dover is a working harbour town in Norfolk County. The pier at the mouth of the harbour is the place to start. People fish from it and walk it at sunset, and the regional tourism organization Ontario's Southwest notes that you can watch the fishing tugs come in with the day's catch. Lake Erie perch and pickerel are the fish most associated with the town's restaurants. Ontario's Southwest also lists the Port Dover Harbour Museum, which covers Lake Erie shipwrecks and shipbuilding. Check its off-season hours before you go.
Most of the beach beside the pier is private. In summer the small public section gets busy, so a cool November morning is a good time to walk it.
Friday the 13th
On every Friday the 13th, motorcyclists ride into Port Dover. Norfolk County says the tradition is more than 40 years old. The Kinsmen Club of Port Dover and the Port Dover Board of Trade run the gathering, and the county handles safety. The county's event page lists November 13, 2026 as the next date. On these days expect road closures downtown, motorcycle-only streets and heavy crowds. If you want a quiet harbour visit, pick a different day. If you want to see the rally, read the county's parking and shuttle information first.
Day 2: Long Point and Port Rowan
Long Point World Biosphere Reserve
West of Port Dover, the shoreline curves out into Long Point. It is a sandspit that reaches about 40 km into the lake, and the Long Point World Biosphere Region describes it as the world's largest freshwater sandspit. UNESCO designated Long Point a World Biosphere Reserve in 1986. The biosphere organization counts about 1,600 species in the region, including roughly 370 bird species. It also notes that conservation work here goes back to 1866, and that Canada's first forestry station opened at St. Williams in 1908.
Long Point Provincial Park
Ontario Parks calls Long Point Provincial Park one of the largest bird and waterfowl migration and staging areas in North America. It has more than 1.5 km of sandy beach. Its 2026 dates:
- Camping: May 8 to November 15, 2026
- Day use: April 3, 2026 to January 3, 2027
This means you can still walk the beach and look for late-autumn waterfowl through the holidays. Camping ends in mid-November. After January 3, plan on the park being closed until spring, and check Ontario Parks for the 2027 opening dates. Wind and high water can change the beach a lot in winter.
Port Rowan
Port Rowan sits on the inner bay. It makes a quiet base for exploring Long Point, which The PRINN puts about 7 km from town. The PRINN is a small boutique hotel and books rooms through its own website. It also points guests to the nearby Backus Heritage Conservation Area, which has a historic mill and heritage village. Check the conservation area's own seasonal hours before you go.
Day 3: Port Burwell
Port Burwell Provincial Park
Port Burwell Provincial Park has a sandy beach about 2.5 km long, and Ontario Parks promotes it for fall bird migration. The park is strictly seasonal. Its 2026 season ran from May 1 to October 25, so it is now closed for winter. Come back between spring and fall for the beach and campground.
HMCS Ojibwa
HMCS Ojibwa is a Cold War-era submarine that the Elgin Military Museum operates on land in Port Burwell. The museum says Ojibwa stays open through the winter on fewer days, and it has posted winter dates for 2026–27 on its tours page. Book a time slot online before you go.
Dress warmly. Only parts of the submarine's interior are heated, though the museum exhibits in the sea containers beside it are heated. Visitors must be at least 8 years old, and pets are not allowed on board.
Day 4: Port Stanley
Harbour town and beach
Port Stanley is in the Municipality of Central Elgin, in Elgin County. In summer it is one of the busiest beach towns on the north shore. In November you will have the harbour walk and beach mostly to yourself. Wear layers for the wind off the lake.
Port Stanley Terminal Rail
Port Stanley Terminal Rail offers hour-long scenic rides from May to October, mostly on weekends. In late autumn it switches to holiday trips. Its schedule lists Santa Treats Trains on November 21, 22, 28 and 29 and December 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20, with departures at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The railway lists no rides from January to March, and it notes that April is closed for bridge repairs. For prices and booking, see the railway's website. It recommends booking online.
Where to stay
Kettle Creek Inn is on Joseph Street in the village. It has guest rooms and suites, a restaurant with a fireplace, and garden courtyards, and it is a comfortable winter base. Contact the inn directly about winter dining hours.
Indigenous presence on the north shore
The Long Point World Biosphere Region acknowledges that it sits on the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. It also names the Neutral, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples as stewards of this place. To learn more, go first to the Nations' own published histories. Our overview of the first peoples of the Great Lakes is another starting point.
November to April: what to expect
- Open in the off season: day use at Long Point Provincial Park (to January 3, 2027), HMCS Ojibwa on reduced winter days, holiday trains at Port Stanley Terminal Rail, and inns and restaurants in the towns. Confirm hours directly, because they change often in winter.
- Closed: Port Burwell Provincial Park (until its 2027 season), camping at Long Point (after November 15), and Port Stanley Terminal Rail from January through April.
- Weather: Expect cold, strong winds off Lake Erie. Shoreline roads can be icy, and beaches can change after storms.
- Birding: Spring migration brings birders back to Long Point. See when to visit the Great Lakes for season-by-season planning.
Extending the trip west
If you have more time, keep driving west along the lake to Leamington and Point Pelee National Park. It is mainland Canada's southernmost point and another major migration stop. See our Point Pelee visitor guide for its winter and spring details.
